When I saw this pretty pale pink and white striped stocking,
I thought for sure that it was part of Target's Simply Shabby Chic line. It turns out that it's not, but it does have that shabby chic look that I love!
It's called "Holiday Stocking" (very creative name, Target!) and it's made of a nice knit material, so it looks very handmade. It sells for only $5.99, but looks much more expensive.
The stocking comes already embellished with rows of pink and
gold sequins. Now, I think you may know
me well enough by now to know what I'm going to say next…it could just use a
"little" something. Or, maybe a lot of something. Like roses, roses, and more roses! I wanted a very romantic, girly look for this stocking, so I
went through my collection of vintage millinery flowers and found a
bunch of pretty shabby roses.
To make the stocking, I first removed the sequins. While pretty, they just weren't the look that I was going
for. They were very easy to remove
because they were only held on with a single stitch, which I simply clipped
with my embroidery scissors.
Next I laid out my roses in a pleasing pattern across the top front of
the stocking. If you don't have
vintage millinery flowers, you could easily substitute silk or fabric flowers
from the craft store. I decided to
go with all different shades of pink, with just a touch of lavender. I also chose to use a variety of
different sized roses for added visual interest.
After I had finalized my design, I carefully sewed on all
the roses. You could use fabric
glue or a glue gun as well (much quicker). I chose to sew mine because I figured if I ever got tired of the
socking someday, I might want to re-use the flowers for another project. The stocking came with an attached knit
loop for hanging, but I decided to add a large bow made from wide pink vintage ribbon.
That's it. It's
really that simple. But look what
a beautiful, shabby result!
Can't you just picture a row of these hanging across the
mantel…
